Western Brook Pond Boat Tour – Tips to a Fun Day

Inland Fiord Tour at Western Brook Pond.

Inland Fjord Tour at Western Brook Pond.

Western Brook Pond Boat Tour  is “THE MUST DO”when visiting Gros Morne.   An amazing 16km water trek through an inland glacier with 2000ft walls on each side that will astound your senses and fill your camera’s memory chip.   Here’s my 8 tips on making this a PERFECT EXPERIENCE…enjoy!

  1. PLAN – It’s a 20min drive from Rocky Harbour to the parking lot, a 45min walk to the dock and you should always have reservations (www.bontours.ca).  Note that there are several departures per day.  Unless you want to buy with CASH at the dock, go to the Ocean View Hotel in Rocky Harbour and buy your tickets at the convenient on-site sales office which takes VISA, MC and other payments.
  2. DRESS – The weather may change several times per day.  Dress in layers and be prepared for temperature and precipitation changes…you are in Newfoundland.
  3. PACK IN – TICKETS, CLOTHES, CAMERA(s), BINOCULARS, LIGHT SNACK
  4. PACK OUT – EVERYTHING…leave nothing behind.
  5. PARK PASS – You NEED a Parks Canada Pass to go on the Boat Tour…prices are HERE and they can also be purchased when you get your tickets.
  6. WILDLIFE – You may see Moose, Hares, Caribou, Eagles (and other birds), Foxes and even the occasional Black Bear.  You will not see Grizzlies or Polar Bears (neither live here)…and no whales as you are in a fresh water fjord.
  7. Book a great hotel for your stay!  www.theoceanview.ca  Unwind afterwards with a great sunset dinner at the Ocean Dining Room and take in the live local entertainment at the Anchor Pub.
  8. Share your experience!
